Saving your natural tooth: why modern root canal treatment is painless

When patients hear "root canal" or "nerve removal", the first reaction is usually fear. That fear has a history behind it. It comes from a time when dentistry did not have the tools or the techniques we have today.

Today it is a completely different story. At Dentalika we approach root canals with one goal: to save your tooth without pain, and to save it for the long run.

What saving a tooth long term really means

No implant, bridge or crown can fully replace your own tooth. A natural root maintains the volume of the jawbone and keeps the neighbouring teeth where they belong.

When decay or trauma reaches the pulp, the nerve inside the tooth, the tooth does not have to come out. A properly done root canal means that tooth stays firmly in the jaw, even though it is no longer "alive". It keeps chewing and it keeps its place in your smile for decades.

Precision is what decides the outcome

Root canals are narrow, curved and rarely regular in shape. The success of the treatment depends on how thoroughly we clean them, millimetre by millimetre.

A rotary file follows the anatomy of the canal instead of straightening it.

Rotary canal preparation. Instead of hand files, which made this work long and tiring, we use flexible rotary instruments. They follow the anatomy of the tooth, shorten the treatment and clean the canal walls more effectively.

Electronic working length measurement. An apex locator tells us the exact length of the root. That way the canal is filled neither short nor long, which is where most later problems begin.

Irrigation. After the mechanical cleaning come the solutions that disinfect even the tiny lateral canals no instrument can reach.

Three dimensional filling. We seal the cleaned space with a thermoplastic material that fills the entire canal system, leaving the bacteria nowhere to return to.

About the pain

The question I hear every single time: "Is this going to hurt?"

It will not.

What patients remember as root canal pain is really the pain of the inflammation, the one that brought them to us in the first place. The treatment itself is done under local anaesthetic. It happens that a patient relaxes enough to doze off in the chair.

Why we do not rush

Endodontics does not tolerate rushing. It asks for patience, a steady hand and a good understanding of tooth anatomy, because you are working in a space you cannot see with the naked eye.

We treat every tooth as if it were our own. In practice that means there is enough time set aside for you, and that you will hear what we are doing and why, step by step.

If you feel pain from hot or cold, a dull ache when you bite down, or someone has already told you the tooth needs treatment, get in touch. Book an appointment and see for yourself that this can be completely painless.
